Derek practices primarily in the areas of corporate finance and securities law. He acts for both issuers and underwriters in respect of financings, mergers and acquisitions, and all dealings with regulators including stock exchanges and securities commissions.

Derek received his Bachelor of Commerce in Finance and Risk Management in 2004; and Juris Doctorate and Master of Business Administration in Global Energy Management in 2009, all from the University of Calgary. Prior to joining Burstall Winger LLP in 2011, Derek practiced corporate commercial and securities law with a law firm in Calgary.

Derek is a member of the Canadian Bar Association (Securities Law and Natural Resources Law Sections), as well as the Law Society of Alberta and the Calgary Bar Association.

Derek also volunteers as a big brother with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Area.
